skirts, standouts and stockholm

On the subject of statement skirts and invigorating the 9-to-5 wardrobe, check out these wage earners by 1.State, J.Crew, Tanya Taylor, and Tibi. P.S. Standouts skirts are also standing out in Stockholm right now, below. The leather lovelies are by Fillipa K and the pleated one, above, is by Sacai Luck from a past season.

Everyday, running-around, up-for-anything boots. Done.

unbasic button-down

Yes, it's time for back-to-work button-downs, but I'm inclined to report for duty in a less obvious choice. Inspired by the snaps here, I'd like to take a shirt dress, like this one, this one or this one, and tie it at the waist for a dramatic, sash-like (Rosie Assoulin-ish) effect.

taking cover

Given that I go to the beach year-round, you'd think I'd have the beach-bag-packing thing nailed down. Not the case. This summer, for some reason or another, I have forgotten to take a hat with me. So recently I resolved: if  I buy a super cute new hat then I will not forget it, and, brilliantly, it's worked. Proof, above! My dress, which I have been living in lately, is by Natalie Martin and you can find it here.

fur keeps

$99, zara

Over the weekend, a good friend and I were going over our fall shopping checklists and she crossed off the fur vest, explaining it was not worth the closet real estate. I'd beg to differ, particularly with this example, which would work over a silk blouse, under an army jacket or a pea coat. And it nails the season's boho spirit.

2. Zara faux fur vest, $99, zara.com

denim ahead

"Tenor setting" is how Vogue describes these flared jeans, the new style for fall. I witnessed them in full effect the other day while shopping at Decades with a vintage-loving friend. In walked a chic woman, clad in head-to-toe denim. Her jeans, however, were far from ordinary. They were cropped, yet not so much to be considered culottes and were flared and hugged the waist. They also featured what seemed like a crease from an undone hem. In other words: tenor setting. To the point where my vintage-collecting friend--who does not own a single pair of jeans--shifted her anti-denim stance and announced that she was thoroughly obsessed. So, I tracked down these new blues by Rachel Comey (above),  Sister Jane, Citizens of Humanity, and MiH.

middle ground

For those who have enjoyed summer's all-the-rage block-heeled sandals (A.K.A., the new stiletto), get ready to step into fall's block-heeled pumps. (The ones pictured above are by Valentino.) The low heel offers easy-to-walk-in comfort and a bit of a lift, along with endless versatility. A plethora of options is already out there, but I've whittled down my faves to these by Chloe, Topshop, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Prada, and  Asos.

the '70s show

seventies trend

Summer won't be the only season to see my feminine, flowy dresses. This fall dictates more of the same, but with a decidedly '70s vibe. Think romantic, bohemian-leaning frocks that go with September-suitable sandals to cold weather boots and tights. My favorites include this Alexis, this Joie, this Wayf, this Oasis, this French Connection, this Cooper & Ella, this Clover Canyon, and this Haute Hippie.  Of course, I also covet the Chloe dress, above!

anorak action

In my book, an anorak with luxe shimmery sleeves is the coolest way to transition into fall. That it can be worn both inside and outside is an additional bonus!

sandal sale

With the end of sandal season closing in (sob!), the sandal sales are commencing. Most notably at Shopbop, flush with flats to block heels and then some. My picks include the sexy lace-up Zimmermann, above, along with these by Matiko, See by Chloe, Splendid, K. Jacques, and Paul Andrew.

top notch

The off-the-shoulder sold-out Johanna Ortiz top I've wanted all summer, the one favored by New Yorkers like Olivia Palermo, above, and Vogue editor, Mollie Ruprecht, below, is now available again, thanks to Moda Operandi. Can't wait to close out the season with it--and beyond!

light baggage

If you're in the market for a new everyday bag, consider Mansur Gavriel's just-out cross-body bag, above. It is an excellent follow-up to its cult (and perpetually sold out) bucket bag, plus equally simple and versatile. And, no doubt, it will be just as sought after. It comes in various neutral hues, but I love this color the most!

prep session

The subject of discussion before this morning's exercise class was almost as dreaded as the imminent leg lifts: back to school shopping. One friend boasted that she had it all done, from the socks to the lunchbox. Slacker that I am, I haven't even started, but with J.Crew's timely 30% off sale going on, I will get cracking. Right this very minute! On top of the boys' khakis, polo shirts, and sweaters for their school uniforms, I'll stock up on a few everyday staples for myself, of course, like these cropped Point Sur jeans, these pointy-toe patent flats, and this infinitely useful and impeccably stylish popover shirt. Now it's your turn!

pumped up

Come fall, I'll be stepping out of lace-up flat sandals and into lace-up pumps. Something along the sexy lines of this Whistles, Aquazurra, Schutz, and Ulla Johnson (pictured above). I'm also tempted by these open-toe, wear-now-and-later babes by Gianvito Rossi and Alexandre Birman

zippity do

the suede mini

Topping my list of key fall pieces I want to wear: the suede mini skirt. For starters, I can wear it now and deep into the doldrums of winter (with tights, of course). In addition, there's the right-now-retro vibe it exudes, plus its A-line silhouette offers figure-flattering everyday comfort. The best ones out there include this Topshop, this Asos, this MiH, this Mango, this Theory, this Forever 21, and this Alexa Chung x AG.

wrapped up

My sister called me from New York yesterday, specifically from Zara, where she reported very distractedly, that there were major goods to be had. "Lots of amazing fall coats," she sputtered. While I can't wrap my head around outerwear just yet (soon though!), I can totally wrap on this incredible statement necklace. Now that's good Zara!

late summer style

Later this month, when I am in denial about summer ending, I'd like to cover up (slightly) in this exact outfit: a Tory Burch sweater and suede shorts and these about-to-sell-out Aquazzura sandals. Otherwise known as summer-to-fall perfection.

hawaii time

Aloha! I just returned from a week-long vacation in Hawaii with a deep tan, natural highlights, a refreshed perspective, and... seven new bikinis! Yes, paradise doesn't get in the way of my shopping, and besides, there may be no better place on Earth to buy a swimsuit, because what bikinis are to Hawaiian girls, jeans are to Angelenos: it's their daily uniform! I surveyed the bikini pros day in and day out on the beaches of Waikiki and the north shore of Oahu, spotting mostly "cheeky" bottoms (i.e., the ones that expose more than a Brazilian, but less than a G-string). The sight of it all got me thinking that if I acquired an authentic Hawaiian-style suit (or seven!), I too would look more bikini pro, less "haole." To get real beach cred, I called a good friend, born and bred in Hawaii, who used to work with me at Conde Nast in New York and now lives in Honolulu, to give me the insider-y rundown on where to shop (Rebecca Beach in Honolulu, Splash, San Lorenzo and The Guava Shop in Halewia) and brands to look for (Acacia, Malia Jones, Mikoh). Among the ones I scooped up, I especially love these styles by Tigerlily (pictured above and 30% off now!), L*Space (it's reversible!), and Mikoh (on sale!). P.S. Neiman Marcus is clearing out loads of swimsuits and cover-ups, many of them up to Hawaiian snuff! You can check out the sale here.

fall's new "it" boot

The ankle boot has long been a wardrobe staple, but this fall, it will get an update, courtesy of a higher cut and a chunky block heel. Of course, Isabel Marant offers up the most excellent version: it has a round toe,  hits and hugs at the shin (perfect for all the cropped fall pants we'll be wearing) and features an easy 3.5-inch heel. Think of it as the next Dicker boot--i.e. the must-have you'll wear infinite number of times! You can find the boot here and here. Less expensive iterations here, here, and here. P.S. Londoners, above, prove it's not too early to bust out boots now!
