An editor/colleague of mine buys herself at least one new winter coat every year. She believes it's the most important element in her winter wardrobe. I agree with her: it's what you wear day in and day out (in the colder climes, at least). It defines you and your style. And it adds a finishing touch to your outfit. Model and blogger Natalie Suarez (pictured above) proves this point with her red coat. Not to sound cliche (and redundant), but there's a lot to be said about sticking to the classics. In the above case, it's a navy and white striped t-shirt and a crisp trench coat, and you can see that the result is impeccably chic--and, despite fashion's incessant forward march--very up to the minute. Along with a good trench and a striped tee, the basics I can't live without include a black cashmere sweater, a fitted army jacket, a pair of go-with-everything ballet slippers, and an evergreen tote bag. I visited H&M's showroom last week to see the upcoming collections. In short, it's all good: minimally chic, bold pops of color, clean lines, and, of course, giddily affordable. The ombre fur jacket is already in stores (I snapped one up and yesterday my twin sister bought one too--not knowing that I had one. Funny!). The metallic sweatshirt is sleek and amazing; it should hit stores this week or next. I will be on the lookout.
I am totally inspired by this vivid outfit from Madewell. I love the bright on bright jewel tones and how the camel coat neutralizes (i.e., reigns in) the crazy combo. The animal print boots I'd skip. A black stiletto or even a black ballet flat would be more up my alley. Speaking of Madewell, my sister and I were photographed for its winter catalog, due out any day now. We wore amazingly luscious knits: Coco in a long fitted gray sweater dress, reminiscent of the Benetton styles back in the mid-80s, and I sported a comfy, slightly oversized waffle knit jumper. As soon as the catalog's out, I will post the pics.
Don't save this leather-sleeved trench coat for a rainy day. Wear it over a floaty chiffon dress--or head-to-toe black.
