Jeans are cute. Suede? Leather? Way more interesting. Soft suede pants, leather trousers—they move, they make the everyday feel like a little more indulgent or decadent or both. Pair with a tee, a sweater, a sweatshirt, whatever. The material does all the talking. Proof in these pics here. Options here (pictured above), here, here and here! If you prefer the texture on top, check out my sister's fringed Johnny Was suede jacket that she worked in Amsterdam or the quilted (looks like suede but not--LOVE!) Banana Republic, last pic.

costume change

It's dress-up time. I’m not talking about Halloween costumes. I mean the real kind of dressing up—the kind that makes you stand a little taller, smile a little wider, and remember how transformative great clothes can be. It's the season when evenings stretch longer, invitations accumulate in our inboxes, and the excuse to add a swipe of lipstick and something silk feels not only appropriate, but necessary. Last night in Beverly Hills, Tory Burch hosted a soiree honoring Laura Brown and Kristina O'Neill and their just-out book All The Cool Girls Get Fired. The mood: potato chips heaving with creme fraiche and caviar, silk dresses brushing past velvet seating, and Monica Lewinsky reclaiming her White House firing with a wink and a mic-drop. My sister and I showed up in our fall finest: AYR cropped black pants, a Khaite blazer (on sale!) and Tory Burch slingbacks. Coco opted for head-to-toe Tory (um, all mine!), along with a Sea New York faux fur vest. In NYC, Mimi Nguyen turned up at a dinner party in a Mango blazer, fastened with a brooch and a resplendent Dorsey pinkie ring, while Yan Yan Chan opted for a glistening lurex evening bag and another with a studded vegan leather Dotthz tote. Paris's seasonal sparkle is manifest in Laura Vidrequin Rosa's link-laden Celine jeans, and holiday-red knit. Let's get dressed this weekend!

lost and found

My sister landed at my doorstep yesterday at 5:20AM—straight off a red-eye from Hawaii. She waltzed in, hugged me groggily, and immediately tucked herself into bed, but not before tossing out one tiny favor: “Can you swing by Mom’s and grab my camera for tonight’s shoot?Easy enough, I thought. Off I went, caffeinated and dutiful, the poster child of sisterly devotion. I headed straight to my mom’s apartment… and that’s exactly where everything went off script. Yes, I found the camera. But I also found a time capsule of treasures lurking in my mother’s closet. One glorious detour later and I was knee-deep in nostalgia: vintage belts, silk blouses with lives of their own, and then a Celine bag from a trip to Rome 20 years ago. The same one we both bought--one prized possession I lost in the January fire. I gasped. I squealed. I triumphantly floated out of the closet (bag in hand), pleased as punch—and then rolled into our event last night with a smug grin, ready to hand my sister her beloved camera. Except… I didn’t have it. I had left the camera sitting pretty on my mother’s bedroom floor. Turns out, I’d make a terrible personal assistant to my sister. But give me a dusty closet, a picked-over Target, or the World Wide Web—and I’m laser-focused. Which brings me to this spectacular find from Zara, above. Not the kind you lose. The kind you love forever, along with this, this and this.

cartfull

You know that quiet heartbreak when you hesitate on a purchase—maybe you think, “I’ll sleep on it, be sensible”—and then BOOM: sold out in your size by morning? That’s happened to me too many times to count, and let me tell you, every time it stings more than stepping on a rogue LEGO in bare feet. So here I am, nursing my cumulative cart-remorse. I came across the studded H&M knit skirt, above, in Amsterdam a few weeks ago, mentally hearted it, and planned to buy it online to spare myself from packing one more thing in my already jam-packed suitcase. It’s now sold out in most sizes—but not in mine—so I snapped it up (truth be told, I bought the matching sweater too!). Yesterday, at the Attersee trunk show, I tried on the “Feed Bag” belt—the kind of piece that would do wonders for literally anything: dresses, skirts, jeans, jackets, coats—basically the entire contents of my closet. And yet, I hesitated. I told myself I’d think about it. Then the hearts started rolling into my DMs after I posted it on Instagram last night. Apparently, everyone else saw what I was in denial about. Consider this my redemption arc: it’s now on its way to me. Plus, I am contemplating this, this and these for future pray-it-doesn't-sell out purchases. Can't stop, won't stop!!

NY in LA

It feels like a migratory pattern has suddenly reversed: a herd of New Yorkers has landed in Los Angeles this week, trading their downtown swagger for sun-drenched lunches at San Vincente Bungalows and coconut-milk cortados at Erewhon. Of course, I'll be joining them. For me, the co-mingling kicks off on Thursday night with a fête for Laura Brown—the sharp-witted Australian media maven and former InStyle editor-in-chief—and Kristina O’Neill, the effortlessly polished former editor of WSJ. Magazine, celebrating their new book All The Cool Girls Get Fired at Tory Burch in Beverly Hills. I'm anticipating peak bi-coastal glamour: sharp tailoring, sculptural jewelry, and enough lace to remind us summer isn’t completely over—at least in California. On the same night (of course!), Kallmeyer is hosting at The Dresden with, no doubt, guests in the line's enviably-cool minimalism. Think signature tuxedo shirts (now on sale, below, which I snapped up for the occasion), and dresses that drape just right. However, since denim is practically the official uniform of Los Angeles, jeans will be out in full force—but this week they’re getting a sophisticated upgrade for our visiting Manhattan set. I love the pinstriped pair by Zara, above, and these suede-trimmed(!) J.Crew, below. I'll also be dropping by Attersee's trunk show at Sunset Tower to not only take in the refined sensuality of Isabel Wilkinson’s architectural silhouettes but also the crowd of linen-and-gold-wearing devotees who looked like they just got back from summering in Hydra. And because no New York takeover would be complete without a hit of Tribeca edge, I'll be hitting Nili Lotan's spring preview today--and fast-forwarding to Marlien in March, wearing the line's signature slouchy barrel-leg pants, gauzy shirting, and faux fur-trimmed army jackets (below) that whisper cool more than they shout. I'm plotting to show my fellow New Yorkers the good side of the 405 by wearing this boucle 3.1 Phillip Lim knit, this studded Pistola jacket (I'm sporting it as a shirt), this Tibi car coat, this fringed Dries Van Noten, these tasseled Jimmy Choo loafers, or this multi-pocketed Mango. This week will be going by faster than a New York minute!

winter is coming

Friends from Jackson Hole blew through town this weekend—bringing with them tales of first tracks, snow forecasts, and unmistakable mountain magic. Naturally, our conversation veered straight into deep winter mode, and before long, I was mentally catapulted into a subzero wonderland of travel and wardrobe planning. There’s the Sun Valley Film Festival in early December—fire pits, faux fur, and film people at The Roundhouse. Aspen over New Year’s is a strong maybe, and then a girls’ trip to Jackson in January. Already knee-dip in style inspo from my friend, Counter Beauty founder Gregg Renfrew, above, I ticked off the jacket box with the Polo Ralph Lauren, below, for under $500! And yet: winter isn’t just a far-off fantasy. Snow is already dusting the San Gabriel Mountains, glistening like a postcard every time I head east on the 10--a bright-white reminder that it’s officially open season for slope-chic pieces—even if your idea of mountain life is more Topanga Canyon than Courchevel. The Outnet has a TON of Alpine-glam wins, including this, this, this and this. Plus, some sea-level finds that stand up to snowy conditions: the easy-to-layer Sezane, the striped Banana Republic (picture the big collars spilling out over a jacket), this leather-looking puffer (size up and get double takes at White House Tavern), the cropped J.Crew fair-isle knit, the Tory Burch wool hoodie, and this Bode-like embroidered jacket.

styling sparks

It’s no small thing to inspire a supermodel’s style—but that’s exactly what happened yesterday when my friend Molly Sims stepped out in an outfit inspired by one I wore not too long ago in New York (below). Her version (with a Toteme skirt, also in this color) reminded me why I fell in love with the look in the first place—and sent me down yet another sourcing rabbit hole for more of those dreamy sheer skirts that somehow feel both effortless and elevated. See below with this $39(!) Asos and this ALC. Naturally, that detour turned into full-on internet trawling, amounting to an end-of-week data dump--the styling sparks and the unexpected finds currently cluttering my browser--to share with you: Anthropologie's embellished coat, Clare V's chocolate velvet pouch, my new Dries Van Noten wrap cardigan (sourced on the day I wore the above outfit!), Edie Parker's glam lipstick lighter case (great gift idea!), this outfit-making denim jacket ($125!), and, finally, the leather and the cute wristlet leather phone case I was telling you about yesterday. Have a great weekend (I'll be reading this as I can't put it down! )
